The Super Saturday Program for Gifted Children is unique in the nation as a parent-run group helping so many youngsters for decades. Founded in 1981, this quality enrichment program serves intellectually gifted children, ages 4-14, in the Greater Cincinnati area, from October to April of each year. Children sign up for classes held Saturday mornings and afternoons during Fall, Winter and Spring terms. Well over 950 children attend Super Saturday throughout the year, choosing from dozens of classes ranging from computer science, photography, biology and chess, to origami, writing, art and architecture.
The Super Saturday Program is run by the Parent Association for Gifted Education, Inc. (PAGE), an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The mission of PAGE is to serve intellectually gifted children early in their lives and to promote the recognition of their significantly different educational needs. PAGE also provides opportunities for parents to learn about the special needs of gifted children and to interact with other parents of gifted children. The membership of PAGE is comprised of all of the parents, teachers and volunteers who are involved in The Super Saturday Program.
Bastian served on the PAGE [Super Saturday] Board of Directors for at least 6 years, with fellow parent Sharon LeBlond, and for most of that time was the group’s PR Director. In that role, she met with parents every Saturday in the Parent room (a waiting area for parents while their children attended classes) and helped facilitate speakers who would address the parents a few times a term about gifted education topics. Bastian helped write and desktop published class schedules for each term, and secured local publicity for the group on cable TV shows and newspaper articles. She also spearheaded the effort to create a new logo for Super Saturday, and then leveraged that to establish a new effort selling logo-branded T-shirts and sweatshirts (named “Spirit Wear”) to raise funds and awareness for the organization.
Bastian’s two children, Nicholas (now in med school) and Rachel (now an elem. teacher), attended Super Saturday for many years in the 1990’s. Lisa credits this outstanding enrichment program with helping these family members develop their individual creative and intellectual gifts.
