St. Anthony Messenger is America’s best-selling Catholic magazine, published each month by the Franciscan Friars of St. John the Baptist Province, Cincinnati, Ohio. Subscriptions support the mission of this Franciscan order, founded by St. Francis of Assisi. The magazine and other editorial products were published by St. Anthony Messenger Press, which later its name to Franciscan Media.
At the time Bastian worked with the publication, it had a monthly circulation of about 480,000.
For five years, Bastian worked with, and was mentored by, some of the most talented writers and editors in the global Catholic publishing world.
As an Assistant Editor of St. Anthony Messenger, Bastian wrote the monthly “Focus” two-page world news column, dozens of feature stories and editorials, and a number of articles for Youth Update and Senior Update newsletters. She also wrote press releases about each issue’s main cover story and the content of the company’s employee newsletter. She edited monthly features, proofed every page of the magazine, and read about over 100 query letters a week. As a member of the Editorial Board she helped think of story ideas and approve the editorial calendar. Bastian worked with the printing, art and typesetting departments on a daily basis, and collaborated regularly with other editors and administrative staff members.
In addition, she helped edit books and spiritually focused newsletters (Catholic Update, Senior Update, Youth Update) on a regular basis.
